Cruising Lane was my first musical product. It was first produced on the Roland XP-80 digital synth workstation. It was very exciting to record and playback multi-track versions of my songs. Technology and product maturity have provided musicians affordable ways to record multiple tracks with digital quality. Of course, with this quality of reproduction, each and every musical gaffe is faithfully reproduced !
The music tracks from Cruising Lane were recorded on a Roland XP-80 keyboard synthesizer. Songs were then copied directly to stereo audio cassette ! Duplicating onto cassettes added a certain ‘retro’ effect to the recordings, with features like hiss, dropout, wow and popping sounds. Cruising Lane had been created, in rough form.
Absorbed by the excitement of this crude step, I decided to move into more current technology, digital recording, mixing and duplication. With a digital multi-track recorder, I captured each of the individual tracks from the XP-80 and added some effects and re-mixed. This became Cruising Lane 2nd Release, which was duplicated in CD format !
In the ensuing mayhem, the recording studio became a sty of musical instruments, cables, tapes, disks, microphones, poetry, scores, data bits and recording gear. Fortunately, many of these articles were never incorporated into the end product. Based on feedback, 2nd Release contains corrections to a myriad of recording errors, omissions and other musical foibles found in the debut album, and not surprisingly, introduces dozens of new defects. Many serious gaffs remain faithfully embedded in this latest effort.
